Heritage-Breed
The Red Poll Breed of cattle is a dual-purpose breed which originated from England. They are derived from a cross between Norfolk Red cattle and Suffolk Dun cattle at the end of the 19th century. They are prized for the meat and milk production as well as their great temperament hardiness and docile nature.
The Red Poll breed is on the “watch” list of the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy, though the number of cattle is said to be growing slowly.
Benefits of Grass-Finished Beef
Ruminants such as cows are not designed to eat grain, however most of the beef available is fed grain, at least during the finishing stage. Grass-finished beef has never been fed grain unlike grass-fed which just means it’s diet was primarily grass. This grass-fed label can be applied to the vast majority of cows anyways. Additionally, grass-finished beef is higher in nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids and many vitamins and minerals.
Born On-Farm
We raise our cattle from birth to slaughter on our farm. We do not buy-in feeder steers which means you can be assured of exactly how they were raised and treated. Many farms buy in cows from other farms or the sale barn to keep up with demand, but the way those animals were raised prior to arriving is often unknown. Make sure and ask if the animal you are eating was born on the farmer’s property. You are paying a premium, make sure and get what you are paying for.
Limited Availability
Because we raise our own cattle, we have a limited supply of beef. But I can tell you, its worth the wait!
